Stronger Together: Building a Movement to Delay Smartphones and Social Media for Children

What we’ve learned as parents of older teens, watching their attachment, and in many cases addiction, to smartphones, should not be wasted. It should guide those coming behind us. This isn’t about shame or blame. It’s about elders saying, “Here’s what I’d have done differently if I could go back.”

Why are we concerned?
The research is undeniable. Anxiety, depression, eating disorders, gaming, gambling and porn addictions, self-harm, and even suicide are at record highs. The foundation? Social media. On one side, our children accessed a world far too mature, and frankly horrific, for them to handle. On the other side, dark forces gained unfiltered access to our children.
Let’s be honest about that.

What should we do?
We don’t want today’s children repeating these patterns. Technology has benefits, but too much, too early, without guardrails, causes harm, even permanent brain changes. A child’s self-image is distorted, and innocence lost cannot be reclaimed.

Some parents say: “It’s their world, they know more than we do.”

But no one can argue a child is equipped to:
• witness extreme violence,
• process abuse, or
• navigate Big Tech’s manipulative algorithms.

That’s our job. To protect. To delay. To guide.

How do we go about it?
Through a mindful balance. Let childhood unfold naturally. Build values, confidence, and resilience before handing over the big wide world in their pocket. This isn’t “no tech.” It’s “wait until ready.”

That’s why parents must stop and ask tough questions before handing over a smartphone :

  • Is my child ready for cyberbullying, comparison, and harmful content?
  • Am I prepared to monitor apps and screen time?
  • If they see explicit content, can they process it, or will it shape them in silence?
  • Would I rather fight with my child today, or fight for their mental health, or even their life, later?

Who is standing with you?
That’s why Smartphone Free Childhood South Africa (SFC-SA) exists.

Launched by a group of concerned parents, the movement has already drawn in over 7500 voices under the rallying cry of “Press Pause, Go Play.”
We’re about connecting and empowering families to stand together, and make a collective choice to delay giving children smartphones until at least high school, and social media until age 16.

Now a registered NPC (since May 2025), we are growing rapidly, with one clear purpose: to challenge the tired narrative of “how can I say no if everyone else is saying yes?”

The answer: we don’t say no alone. We say it together. We start conversations. We shift culture. We take back control. And we do it through unity.
